Andy Murray withdraws from the Montreal Master-Tennis News
London Olympics gold medallist, Andy Murray, withdrew from the Montreal Masters due to his knee injury after his opening match against Flavio Cipolla on Wednesday. The British number one was scheduled to play against the
Canadian number one, Milos Raonic, in the third round of the tournament in the Toronto's Rexall Centre.
In a press conference the Scot told the media, “Normally when I move on to hard courts, I have 10 days or so practicing and you feel things like this, but you can work around it by doing the right training and what not. I
do not want to go full out and possibly do any more damage. That was why I decided not to play.”
He further added, "Over the next few days we'll come up with a plan and strategy to either get myself ready for Cincinnati, or if not, then plan for the best way to prepare for the U.S. Open. It'll just be about what's the
next move.”
Murray was considered as the top favourite contenders of the Rogers Cup after his excellent exhibited of brilliance in the London Olympics. The world number four is still unsure of whether he will contest in the upcoming
Cincinnati Masters tournament or not.
Further, due to the absence of the main tennis power such as reigning world number one, Roger Federer and world number three, Rafael Nadal from the Rexall Centre, the stage is perfect for the former world number one, Novak
Djokovic to claim his second consecutive title at the Rogers Cup. The top seeded Serbian tennis icon was set to compete against Sam Querrey on Thursday, as their match delayed dire to bad weather.
Murray’s withdrawal also opens door for the home favourite Raonic to secure a title at his own soil. He told the media that the Brit’s withdrawal is something he was looking forward to after the London Olympics.
Raonic was fully prepared to encounter the number one Briton in the tournament; however, the news permits of his departure gave the Canadian a licence to progress toward the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 event for the
first time in his professional career.
