Andy Murray won’t trade gold for Wimbledon – Tennis News
World number four, Andy Murray, completed the revenge mission against the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, before the home crowd at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, on the 5th of August when he trashed the top
seed Swiss in straight sets to win a gold medal.
He lost to the same man at a same place just a few weeks earlier in July during the grand finale of the Wimbledon Championships. So, the revenge was on his mind and he succeeded in accomplishing his goal in emphatic fashion; crushing
the 30-year-old Swiss star in straight sets.
However, keeping everything aside, the feeling of winning a gold medal for the Scot was a special one and he promptly commented on a query to one of the media members that he will never exchange gold for Wimbledon, not at any cost.
Murray confessed, “When it comes to Wimbledon, at least I’ll now know it is possible to win something that hasn’t been done for a long time. I would love to win Wimbledon for sure but this felt good and I wouldn’t change this for
anything now for sure. It was the best week of my tennis life by a mile and it was the biggest win of my life.”
No Grand Slam for the fourth ranked Briton but a gold medal, it’s a new dilemma that has struck the tennis critics and more importantly Federer letting go an opportunity to win a missing gold medal from his hands at the age of
30.
The win for the reigning world number one would have meant that he is the third player in the modern era to complete a Career Gold Slam alongside the likes of Andre Agassi and his arch rival, Rafael Nadal.
Murray would welcome such a majestic honour any day. He was craving for a Grand Slam title earlier this year; came closer at Wimbledon but left the crowd dejected after losing to the great Swiss legend in four sets. However, the
spot is washed away by his classic triumph in Olympics Games for sure.
He further added, “It was the best way to come back from a Wimbledon final and I’ll never forget it. I hope this will give me confidence to believe in myself more and give me a shot at winning a grand slam.”
The number one Briton is definitely a fighter and probably look to get off the mark in the Grand Slams category at the US Open in New York, starting in September.
