Andy Murray’s concerns before the U.S Open – Tennis News
Ranked fourth in the ATP World Rankings, Andy Murray, bombarded the news of his sudden withdrawal from the Rogers Cup due to his problematic knee on Wednesday. The British tennis ace won his initial match against Flavio Cipolla
in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, in Toronto’s Rexall Centre.
Murray exhibited a remarkable performance this year so far. He won the London Olympics against the reigning world number one, Roger Federer, giving him a straight sets upset of 6-2, 6-1, 6-4, at the courts of All England Club.
This has been the Scot’s biggest achievement, as he had never secured a Major title in his career. Luckily, he also won a silver medal at the Great Games in the mixed doubles category with her fellow compatriot Laura Robson.
The Scot told the media, "It was a bit sore yesterday (Wednesday), and then I had some treatment after the match. It felt a bit better, and then I came in today (Thursday) and saw the physios. They did some work on it and it is
still a bit sore. I did a little warm-up on the bike to try it out and it was still sore, so I had to make a decision as to what I was going to do... I do not want to go full out and possibly do any more damage. That was why I decided not to play."
His withdrawal from the Rogers Cup was a source of relief for the other contenders. The former world number one, Novak Djokovic might win his lost glory by at successively securing the Championship this year. The stage is also
clear for the Frenchman, Richard Gasquet who will be playing his first quarter-finals in a Masters 1000 event after Murray’s departure from the tournament.
Nonetheless, Murray has worked hard to win number one spot in his home Olympics. He is also not sure of whether he will contest in the Cincinnati Master held in New York. This might turn the situation to his disadvantage; if his
recovery is slower than expected, he might not be able to take part in the US Open Championships held in the last week of August. The Brit has never won a Grand Slam and this year could be his only chance to prove worth.
