Andy Pettitte helps New York Yankees shutout Tampa Bay Rays 7-0 – MLB Update
New York Yankees gave Tampa Bay Rays a taste of their own medicine, securing a comfortable 7-0 win at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Tuesday, June 5 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The pitchers displayed some top quality throwing skills and the Yankees improved their record to 30-24. Credit must be given to the Captain Derek Jeter who has led his team out of testing times.
New York had made a very poor start to the season, suffering a series sweep at the hands of Tampa Bay Rays. However, they have shown great bounceback ability to secure third place in the American League East Division behind Tampa Bay with a solid .556 win percentage.
The Rays, who led to the American League before this game, have moved to second position now and it will be interesting to see if they can bounce back in game two of this series to keep their place at the top of the table.
"We stay in the theater district when we're in town and I thought it might be good theater," Maddon said before the game. "Why not hit him fourth and have him hit a home run?"
"I don't really try to strike guys out," Pettitte said. "I feel like I am able to keep guys off-balance. My command was really good tonight."
"We just didn't have a good night," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We didn't play any area of the game well. I'm really looking for the next 24 hours to come around."
Yankees starting pitcher Andy Pettitte put up another dominant show to win for the third time this season. Pettitte has allowed just six runs in his four starts with an incredible 1.88 ERA. He is convinced that he has found something new with his fastballs that can trouble the hitters throughout the season.
Russell Martin also had an excellent time on the plate, hitting a Grand Slam to help Yankees take an impassable 6-0 lead in the fourth inning. Nick Swisher doubled to right in the fifth to end the game on a strong note for New York.
