Andy Pettitte shines as New York Yankees edge past Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 – MLB Update
New York Yankees crushed the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday, September 19 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Robinson Cano provided Yankees with a great start as he doubled to deep centre in the first inning to put his side on the board. Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson made useful contributions with the bat to extend the Yankees’ lead to 3-0 in the first.
Blue Jays showed excellent fighting abilities to reduce Yankees’ lead to 3-2 in the eighth but it seemed luck was not on their side on Wednesday. Nick Swisher earned an RBI single to left in the eighth to restore New York’s two run lead.
"The beginning of the game it was almost like you could hear people talking -- I'm just trying to focus," Pettitte said in a post game interview. "I think for me it probably would've been better if we had a packed house."
"When you see these guys go through what they've been going through, and I've been sitting here watching and just trying to cheerlead for them, it's great to be able to go out there and feel like you contributed," he further added.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Andy Pettitte made a strong come back from the Disabled List, allowing just four hits in five scoreless innings to grab his fourth win of the season. The veteran pitcher is a key member of pitching rotation and surely, he will be
looking to take his team into the playoffs.
Relief pitcher Clay Rapada, Derek Lowe pitched with great control and accuracy to keep Blue Jays on the defensive. Joba Chamberlain, Boone Logan, David Robertson and Rafael Soriano combined to give just two runs in three solid innings and guide the Yankees
to a much needed victory.
With their win against their American League East Division rivals, Joe Girardi and company also reclaimed their Number one status on the standings table and it will be interesting to see if the Yankees can continue their impressive winning streak to ease
into the World Series.
