Andy Pettitte unlikely to make decision by Thanksgiving Day – MLB New York Yankees News
According to a leading sports website, starting pitcher Andy Pettitte is expected to have a timetable on his decision to return next season. However, considering the fact he will be spending Thanksgiving week with his family at their ranch, it is likely
the left hander will be unable to deliver the decision on his baseball future by Thanksgiving Day.
Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman and Manager Joe Girardi are awaiting clarification on whether the veteran southpaw is looking forward to pitch in 2013. Although Major League source are convinced he will return for one more season, there is a possibility
that he might decide to take retirement for the second time in two years.
Pettitte’s return could play a key role in deciding the outcome of Yankees’ next season. In some ways, the 40-year-old is an important piece of New York’s offseason puzzle. Right now, Yankees’ pitching rotation is made up of ace C.C. Sabathia, Phil Hughes,
David Phelps and Ivan Nova. The Bombers also re-signed the Japanese starter Hiroki Kuroda on Tuesday in an effort to build a strong starting rotation.
"Hiroki Kuroda chose us on a lesser deal last year and I suspect he's done the same again this year," Cashman said in an interview with abcnews.go.com.
"By coming here, I suspect that he left money on the table. I suspect it was a very aggressive market on him, and I think it is a reflection of he really enjoyed playing here for this city, for this team, for this organization and with these teammates to
come back under the circumstances he's coming back on," he further added.
Having one of the most experienced pitchers in their attack will certainly help the Yankees have more depth in their rotation. Pettitte went 5-4 with an excellent 2.87 ERA in 12 starts last season. However, he missed most part of the season with a broken
left fibula. It will be interesting to see if the starter can begin from where he left off last season to give his side a chance to win the American League East Division title.
