Powell On His Way
Welsh international, Andy Powell, has moved closer to a new club after Cardiff announced they are about to release the player.
Powell has been linked with a variety of clubs all over the United Kingdom and Europe but it now appears that the London Wasps are winning the race to secure his signature.
He's a highly sought-after player because of the dynamic presence and influence that he possesses in the game. It will be interesting to see if he can make the move into the Premiership as easily as is being predicted, as the pessimists have already been warning that the player isn't as good as many are thinking.
If he does move to the Wasps then Powell has many strings to his bow, which will make him a very important player down at the club. Remember that there is still time for someone to swoop in and sign him, so hold off from following the player until you know where he's going to be for certain.
Attributes
Powell is a huge player and huge players carry around a big presence. This will make him a figure in any side that everyone else looks to during tough games and pressure situations. It also makes him a very intimidating player to go up against as many of his opponents will state.
He is a superb challenger for the ball and has an ability to thrown in a tackle at the very last moment, which can bring down an opposition attack. This is important because he's very much a last line of defence, and if he couldn't tackle then it would mean that the opposition are almost certain to score once they have gone beyond the rest of the team.
He seems to be a popular guy because there are some very negative feelings coming out of Cardiff about his departure. This will make his transition to a new club very easy because he can walk in from the first day and put smiles on faces and eradicate any feelings of awkwardness.
Time Left
It's very important to state at this moment in time that no official or legal deal has been done with the Wasps. Everything is still up in the air and the indications are based on rumours coming from professional rugby communities.
It would be a very good move for the player but the point is that another club can still put together a bid and present a highly appealing package to Powell, which could swing any doubts he currently has in his mind.
This sort of thing has happened before in rugby and other sports so it is by no means out of the question. The player is not likely to come out and provide strong indications over his own future so you need to scout around and look for any official sources and leaks if you want confirmation before backing him.
Betting Advice
The Wasps will remain an outside bet for the Premiership next season even if Powell does sign. This is because they lack consistent quality across all areas of the team and this will make it hard for the side to push on next year.
Be wary of backing Powell as an individual. If you have never seen him physically or in a playing sense before then you'll quickly be able to work out that he isn't the sort of player that is going to score a record number of points every season. Focus on other smaller bets relating to his game, which are likely to work to your advantage.
