Andy Reid unsure about Philadelphia Eagles QB (quarterback) for 2011
The Eagles are going into the off-season with a lot of uncertain fortunes, mainly due to problems with the league’s labor contract. Michael Vick is technically supposed to be a free agent with no certainty that he will be back. “We’ll see,” said head coach
Andy Reid when asked who will be the starting quarterback (QB) next year.
Vick has led the Eagles to have a 10-7 record and the NFC East crown. But losing to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, in the Wild Card play-off, marred a great comeback story. The Eagles still have Kevin Kolb as a backup quarterback, even though he started
the season as a starter. He suffered a concussion in the first week of the season against the Packers and made way for Vick to take over as starter. Kolb stunned the NFL with an amazing performance which left Vick as the starter and the former as his backup.
He has had the best season of his career, setting personal highs in almost every category and even selected to be the starting quarterback for the NFC team in the 30’s Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii. Vick stated, "We're going to have to wait and see,
but I really do hope I am [back], I enjoyed this season. I enjoyed the group of guys that I played with. I enjoyed the progress and the success that we all made as a young team. I think the sky's the limit."
Kolb just wants to be a starter even if it means leaving the Eagles. The QB patiently backed Donovan McNabb up for three years before finally getting a chance to start. But he played for only one half of a game as a starter before going down with a concussion.
When Kolb came back to his senses, he was the backup for Vick.
The quarterback has been great in the seven starts that he has had in his career. Kolb’s a great asset to have for the team since Vick’s playing style makes him more likely to be injured. But the QB does not want to sit around waiting for Vick to go down.
The quarterback expressed, "I want to be starting somewhere,"
Kolb is a gem for other teams who need a quarterback although the Eagles will have a high starting price for him. The player signed a one year extension contract along with an $11 million bonus after McNabb was traded to the Washington Redskins but is expected
to make only $1.4 million in 2011. Reid wants both Vick and Kolb to come back for 2011 and does not mind that Kolb wants to be a starter. Reid articulated, "I'm fired up to hear him say that. You want any player, especially a quarterback, to want to be a great
player. That's important at that position. I would love to have him back. Same is with Michael. I want him back. They are tremendous players."
