Andy Robinson looks to upset Australia – Rugby News Update
Andy Robinson, the head coach of Scotland, feels that his side can upset Australia when the teams meet for a match at Newcastle on Tuesday, June 5.
The odds are stacked against Scotland, who are currently on an eight-game losing streak, but they can take heart from the fact that they defeated the Wallabies, when the two teams met last time. Scotland emerged victorious at Murrayfield in November 2009,
by 9-8.
Scotland will have to be at their best in Newcastle, as a storm is expected before the game, which will make the turf slippery and keeping possession of the ball will be crucial. The Scots have had trouble keep the ball accurately, and Robinson has pinpointed
that as a place where the team has to improve, if they are to defeat the Wallabies.
He spoke about his strategy for the game and said, "We have to put Australia under huge pressure in that area, we want to have a go at them, put pressure on Genia and slow Australia ball down. The only way to do that was playing Barclay and Ross Rennie together,
who I think are our best two players over the ball.”
Robbie Deans, the head coach of Australia is set to hand-out debuts to five new players, and will have one eye on the match against Wales on Saturday June 9. He has also announced David Pocock as the new captain. Robinson feels that breaking down Pocock,
who plays as a flanker will be the key to success.
Richie Vernon, the Scotland flanker who will be on the bench was part of the squad that defeated Australia in 2009. Speaking about that game, he said, "The basis for that win was that we were really tight defensively and got stuck in. They had the chances
but our scramble defence got us through.”
He further added, "I feel that is going to be key for us again.”
If Scotland does not get turned over easily and is able to breakdown the Wallabies with success, they are going to be in with a chance to win. A new look Wallabies on the other hand, will want to start on a winning note.
