Andy Roddick, Philipp Kohlschreiber move to the second round – AEGON International 2012
Andy Roddick beats Sam Querrey 5-2 Retd.
Former world number one, Andy Roddick of USA, was leading against his compatriot, Sam Querrey, 5-2 in the first set, when the latter retired from the contest due to a back injury.
Roddick and Querrey started off by holding their serve in the opening two games to level the score at 1-1. Roddick captured four games in a row after that, breaking his opponent twice and taking the score to 5-1. Querrey claimed
one more game to reduce the trail to 2-5 but he lost the following one and went down 2-5. He decided to forfeit the contest at that moment, as he was having a severe pain in his back.
Ranked 33rd in the world, Roddick pounded five aces and 73 percent of the first serves, converting nine of the 11 first and three of the four second deliveries into points. The American also fared brilliantly on the
second returns, sealing seven of the nine points. The 29-year-old did not face any break threat and converted two of the five opportunities he created.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Roddick said, "I felt like this was the best place to [prepare]. You can't really replicate match situations in practice, so it's something I needed. They afforded me the opportunity to
play here and I'm thankful for it."
The American is slated to face Jeremy Chardy of France in the second round.
Philipp Kohlschreiber defeats Go Soeda 6-4, 7-5
Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, seeded seventh in the draw, prevailed over the world number 56, Go Soeda of Japan, in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to proceed to the round of 16.
Kohlschreiber and Soeda won their serve in the first four games, levelling the scores at 2-2. The German struck in the fifth game to move ahead 3-2 but Soeda did not take much time to equalise it at 3-3. Kohlschreiber grabbed another
breakthrough in the ninth and consolidated on it to win 6-4.
The second set saw some stable performance by both players, as they did not lose their serve in the first 10 games and evened out the score at 5-5. Kohlschreiber hit a blow to the Japanese in the 11th and won his next
serve to seal it 7-5.
The German needed an hour and 27 minutes to get past his Japanese opponent.
Kohlschreiber will play a wild card entrant, Jamie Baker of Great Britain, in the round of 16. Baker upset his higher ranked opponent, Donald Young, in the first round match.
