Andy Roddick beats Bjorn Phau in the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Former world number one, Andy Roddick of USA, remained on course for winning his maiden Wimbledon title, as the three-time finalist defeated Bjorn Phau of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(1), 6-3 in the second round at the All
England Club on Thursday. The American took two hours and two minutes to clinch victory in a one sided match.
Roddick and Phau won their serve in the first three games to take the score to 2-1 in the former’s favour. The American snatched a break in the fourth and consolidated on it to move ahead 4-1. Roddick did not lose his serve even
once in the entire set, eventually closing it 6-3.
The American number three pounded four aces and 83 percent of the first serves on target, converting 18 of the 19 first and two of the four second delivery points. He also gave a good performance on the net, winning five of the
seven points in the opener.
Roddick and Phau put on a splendid serving display in the second set, as they did not allowed each other to break serve throughout the proceedings, levelling the score at 6-6 and taking it to a tie-breaker. The American started
off with a 4-0 lead and capitalised on it to triumph 7-6(1).
The 30th seed, Roddick, bombarded seven aces on his opponent's court and conceded only one double fault in the second set. None of the two players managed to create any break chance.
Phau made a strike in the opening game of the third set and won his next serve to gain a 2-0 lead. However, Roddick took complete control later on, as he allowed the German to claim only one more game, grabbing it 6-3.
Roddick will lock horns with world number five, David Ferrer of Spain, in the round of 32.
Commenting on the Spaniard, Roddick said, “I think he's won an insane amount of matches this year. I think it's 44 or something that I was reading last week. We both won on grass last week in the lead up [Ferrer won at the UNICEF
Open].”
He added, "I think it will be a high level. You have to play well too beat David. He just doesn't give you anything I have a ton of respect for him, the way he goes about his business, and what he gets out of himself is pretty
impressive. I'm going to have to play really well.”
This will be their 11th meeting, with Roddick trailing 4-6 in the head to head record.
