Andy Roddick breezes past Tommy Haas to secure a 2nd round spot – Davidoff Swiss Indoors 2011
A former world number one, America’s Andy Roddick eased past Tommy Haas of Germany in straight sets at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors 2011, an ATP World Tour 500 series event taking place at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland. He
earned a 6-3, 6-4 success over the 33-year-old German to book a second round spot on Wednesday.
Duelling for the thirteenth time, seventh seeded American put up a solid display of tennis to stomp over Haas, ranked 212th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, in straight sets. After one hour and eleven
minutes long marathon, Roddick not only lowered the trail by 6-7 in the head-to-head series against the German but also inched towards the $1,000,000 prize money.
29-year-old Roddick confidently entered the Basel’s indoor hard courts and after earning the first blood in the fourth game, he eventually went 4-1 up. Later, the American held remaining serves and clinched the opener with a 6-3
win. He easily swiped in entire serves without facing any breakpoint and cashed in the only breakpoint opportunity to his advantage.
The high flying American kept momentum floating into the final set and easily plucked entire serves without facing any breakpoint. He capitalised on one out of four breakpoint chances to his advantage in the seventh game to pocket
the set by winning six games to four.
Summing up Roddick’s performance, he fired an amazing twelve aces to clinch comfortably. In addition to this, he manipulated a higher first serve share of 67 percent as compared to the German’s 57 percent. The American also capitalised
on the several unforced errors the former world number two Haas committed and dominated throughout the match.
Next up for the seeded American is the Czech, Radek Stepanek who crushed Colombian Santiago Giraldo with a breadstick on their second meeting.
World number twenty-five, Stepanek required an hour to flash past the Colombian, ranked twenty spots below him.
32-year-old Czech went on a five games killing spree after Giraldo held his opening serve in the second game. He saved both breakpoints and capitalised on two out of five breakpoint chances to his advantage to earn the breadstick.
Stepanek carried his winning ways in the final set and after breaking the Colombian’s serve in the fifth and the ninth game, he pocketed the set with a 6-3 win. He faced zero breakpoint and cashed in both breakpoint opportunities
to his advantage to win convincingly.
