Andy Roddick confirms his participation at the 2012 AEGON Championships – Tennis News
Former champion, Andy Roddick, has announced that he will warm up for the Wimbledon at the AEGON Championships from 11th to 17th June in Queen’s Club, London.
He joins Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin Del Potro in a star studded line up for the Queen’s. Though, world number two, Rafael Nadal, has already declared that he won’t be participating here this year. Instead,
he will be warming up for Wimbledon at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.
Roddick has an exceptional record in London, winning 32 of the 38 matches he has played here. The right-hander is a four-time former titlist at the Queen’s Club. The American grabbed the crown at the AEGON Championships in 2003-05
and 2007. He lost to world number four Andy Murray in straight sets 3-6, 1-6 in the semi-finals last year.
The 29-year-old said, "I love coming back to the Queen's Club. There's so much history there and it's one of my favourite tournaments on the Tour. It's hard to believe I've won a tournament as strong as the AEGON Championships
four times and I'd love to win it again."
Grass is Roddick’s favourite surface and he has always done well at the fastest courts. The American is a three-time runner up at the Wimbledon Championships, losing to 16-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, on all three occasions.
Roddick’s performance was going down continuously in the last 12 months, as he finished outside the top 10 in 2011 for the first time since 2001. The American had won just five of the 10 matches he had played before the Sony Ericsson
Open. Last month, he went out of the top 30 for the first time in the last 11 years.
However, the American found form last fortnight, as he stunned Federer in a three set thriller 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-4 in the round of 32 in Miami. This was Roddick’s just third win over the Swiss Maestro in 24 career meetings.
After the match, Federer said, "I feel like I lost against a former No 1, not that I lost against a guy ranked 30 in the world," Federer said. "I'm happy to see Andy play really well. He's a great champion, and enjoy him while
you have him. It was a great night for him and America's tennis."
With that win over Federer, Roddick secured back his place in the top 30 and is ranked 29th in the world now.
