Andy Roddick downs Andreas Beck in his opening round match – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number 10, Andy Roddick of the United States, had an excellent start at the Wimbledon Championships, as he won his opening round matchup against the unseeded German opponent, Andreas Beck on Tuesday.
Being played on the Centre Court of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, Roddick registered a comprehensive straight sets victory over Beck 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-3, to qualify for the second round
of the Grand Slam tournament.
Eighth seed Roddick has made it to the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships three times, losing to Roger Federer on all the occurrences. The American suffered a nasty shoulder injury, which cost him to pull out of the French
Open this year but his performance with the racquet on Tuesday hints his excellent physical fitness.
156th ranked Beck stood no match for the American veteran and hung in the contest for two hours and fifteen minutes before submitting the game. Besides the hard fought second set, Roddick’s domination was clearly seen
in the contest, beating Beck in every segment of the game. His return from injury raised a lot of questions about his fitness during the Wimbledon Championships but Roddick proved everyone wrong by exhibiting a tremendous display of sheer class and determination.
“The second set tie-break was big for me because there’s a big difference between two sets up and one-set all,” expressed Roddick after winning the contest, “He had a pretty smart game-plan and was going for his shots a lot, but
I felt like I was playing better than him so I didn't want to let him back in. I’m pretty happy with where my game is right now. I feel healthy and I know what it takes to go deep at this tournament.”
Roddick fired 30 thudding aces in contest, while delivering 72 per cent first serve on target and amazingly won 55 out of 65 points on it. His victory was greatly assisted by 34 unforced errors from his German opponent, who failed
to break Roddick in the entire matchup. The American converted seven out of 15 break opportunities en route to victory.
Roddick’s victory earned him a berth in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament, where he will face Victor Hanescu of Romania for a place in the third round. Hanescu was successful against Jaroslav Pospisil of Czech Republic
in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of the tournament.
