Andy Roddick drowns Victor Hanescu to reach the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Former world number one, Andy Roddick of the United States, continued his impressive run at the Wimbledon Championships, as he cruised past Victor Hanescu of Romania in the second round clash on Wednesday.
In the matchup being played at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, Roddick ousted Hanescu in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, in just one hour and fifty two minutes of play to advance to the
third round of the Grand Slam tournament.
Eighth seed Roddick has made a tremendous comeback into the pro tennis arena after his agonising shoulder injury, which caused him to miss the French Open this year. His physical fitness was a huge concern for his fans when he
took off the Wimbledon campaign this week but his two comprehensive straight sets victories in the initial rounds has proved the toughness of the man and the brilliant form he is currently enjoying.
The 28-year-old American put up a great display of aggressive tennis in the Wednesday’s contest against Hanescu, as he outclassed him in every segment of the game to come out as the winner. He served brilliantly, reaching 65 per
cent accuracy and fired 15 thudding aces, with merely six unforced errors in the entire contest.
63rd ranked Romanian veteran has already suffered three defeats at the hands of Roddick and his second round loss on Wednesday made his head-to-head record against the American to 0-4. Hanescu’s form has been rather
ordinary in this year and he has faced defeats in 19 out of 33 singles matches he played in the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season.
Roddick stung four out of 10 break opportunities in the contest, with the first break coming early in the opening set to lead 2-0. He reeled off all the 14 first serve points in and carried on his early lead to seal the first set
at 6-4 to get one up in the contest.
The following set took off in the exactly the similar manner as the opener did, with Roddick breaking again at 2-0 and then broke again to clinch the second set at 6-3 as well. The American sustained his winning momentum in the
third set also, winning the matchup at 6-4 and got a pass to the third round of the tournament, where he will face the Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez for a place in the third round. Lopez was successful against Rainer Schuttler of Germany, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-2,
6-2, in the second round.
