Andy Roddick enjoyed his loss at the Miami Tennis Cup final – Tennis News
Former world number one, Andy Roddick, had fun in his loss against Spain’s Nicolas Almagro at the Miami Tennis Cup Final 2012 on Sunday. He endured a 4-6, 5-7 loss against the Spanish number three but had fun at this Exhibition event taking place in Miami
in South Florida, United States.
Roddick, who recently retired from professional tennis at the US Open, re-ignited his spark at the Crandon Park Tennis Center in Key Biscayne. He shocked the Olympic gold medallist and the British number one, Andy Murray, in straight sets to book a spot
in the final showdown.
The 30-year-old, who gained four pounds since his retirement at Flushing Meadows, enjoyed playing tennis despite falling to Almagro.
The American icon commented in a courtside interview after bowing out to the world number 11.
“I had fun. I enjoyed it. It’s nice for me to come back in a little bit of a competitive atmosphere. So, selfishly, I really enjoyed myself, and I’m happy that they had me here.”
Both players event let ball-girls play few points and enjoyed the match. However, the contestants displayed brilliant skills throughout the battle.
Roddick kept his serves until he suffered the first shock in the ninth game with backhand unforced error. He failed to snatch his break back and eventually suffered a 4-6 loss.
In the following set, the veteran held his composure and after brushing off a breakpoint in the ninth game, he levelled the scores at 5-5. However, Roddick lost his serve again and ultimately endured a 5-7 loss.
Summing up the 2003 US Open titlist’s performance in this exhibition event, Roddick showed world he still got spark in himself.
The American star retired standing at number 22 in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings. He captured two titles this season and enjoyed great success on tour.
Roddick reflected after the final:
“I enjoy playing tennis still, and it was never about me not enjoying tennis. It was about me not being able to commit to being a professional tennis player. It’s tough for me to separate [my decision] from if there was no injuries, because there were injuries.
And that’s what a lot of my decision was based on.”
The American star is now looking forward to spend time with his wife.
