Andy Roddick eyes record fifth AEGON Championships title in June – Tennis News
Former world number one, Andy Roddick, is eyeing his fifth ever AEGON Championships title this summer when he lands at the hard courts of The Queen’s Club. The tournament is scheduled from June 11th-17th just
before the finalization of the list of those players that will take part in the London Olympics.
Talking about his aim of winning the title for the record fifth time, Roddick stated, “I love coming back to the Queen's Club. There's so much history there and it's one of my favourite tournaments on the Tour. It's hard to believe
I've won a tournament as strong as this (the AEGON Championships) four times and I'd love to win it again."
He has recently been in terrific run of form except the times when he was struggling to recover from the hamstring and ankle injury. The performances he had put forth in recent times have reminded everyone of his fantastic era
when he was ranked world number one. The recent heroic of Roddick includes the majestic upset against the legendary Swiss tennis icon, Roger Federer, in the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami.
Other players that will head on to the field include the likes of number one Briton, Andy Murray, big French player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and the recent entrant to the Top-10 players of the world, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina.
The American tennis icon was also happy from his recent form and mentioned in an interview, “I feel like something good is coming.” He topped the world in 2003 after his majestic triumph in the US Open Grand Slam tournament.
No one can forget his rocket-paced serves that were almost impossible to return in his supreme era. He has a fair record of 8-8 this year and enters into the 30’s later in August. The stamina might have lessened and so did the
pace of his serves but his enthusiasm and willpower to perform his best out there has not decreased at all.
He started this season at AAMI Classic and powered his way into the third round where the Japanese contender, Kei Nishikori, stood in his way. The Australian Open campaign was formidable for the American; he was stunning in the
opening round but incurred an injury against the Aussie former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt.
The second round exit in the SAP Open coupled with first round loss in Regions Morgan Keegan Championship hinted another dismal season for the American. However, he fought his way back in the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships,
Indian Wells and Miami; regained his form and looked in good shape. Probably, this will help him to win the title in June.
