Andy Roddick finally decides to retire from professional tennis after US Open – Tennis News
American old horse, Andy Roddick, has announced that the current US Open Championships will be his last ever professional tennis tournament. The 30-year-old believes it is the right time to bid farewell to the ATP World Tour and
feels not physically fit enough to take on gruelling competitions from the other younger opponents.
He was talking to a press conference on his 30th birthday on Thursday evening and made it quite clear that he cannot play professional tennis anymore.
“I'll make this short and sweet,” Roddick said. “I've decided that this is going to be my last tournament. It's been a process. Certain parts throughout the year, I've thought about it, just with the way my body feels, with the
way that I'm able to feel like I'm able to compete now, I don't know that it's good enough. I don't know that I've ever been someone who's interested in existing on tour. I have a lot of interests and a lot of other things that excite me.”
Currently holding the world number 22 spot in the ATP World Rankings, Roddick has been the heartthrob of American tennis for years. He was the one who brought a whole new dimension in the sport of tennis and climbed to the world
number one spot in 2003 to carry on the legacy of American tennis after the big guns like, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, were about to sideline from the professional circuit.
Winner of 32 ATP championship titles, the American veteran has the sweetest memories at the Flushing Meadows and desires US Open to be his last played tournament. He won his only Grand Slam title right here way back in 2003 and
another Major title added to his tally before retirement will be something he desire desperately.
Roddick is currently placed in the second round of the US Open men’s singles draw and is to square off against the Aussie tennis prodigy, Bernard Tomic, on Friday afternoon. He is riding a 21-15 winning record this season so far,
with two ATP titles under his belt and aiming to extend this count in New York.
