Andy Roddick jumps to number eight in the world
The 28-year-old Andy Roddick from the United States of America used his impressive run in the semi final round at the Swiss Indoors Basel to jump to number eight in the South African Airways ATP list in this week’s ranking, which
is his highest place since June 21 of this season. He was previously ranked number ten in the world.
The Texas resident, who made his debut on the ATP World Tour back in 2000, is the top-ranked American at the moment. Roddick became a Grand Slam winner when he captured a crown at the year’s final major, the United States Open
in New York back in 2003 after getting the better of Juan Carlos Ferrero in the finals.
The right-hander has also made his way into a total of four other major title battles in his career, three at Wimbledon along with his United States Open final appearance where he lost to Roger Federer in straight sets. Roddick
along with the Swiss tennis maestro, Federer is the only contender to have been ranked in the Association of Tennis Professionals top ten at the season-end from 2002 to 2009 in a row.
The American is famous for his extremely strong serves and holds the record for the quickest serve recorded in the ATP tennis, which was measured at 155 mph. He is the last male player from the United States of America to capture
a major singles crown back in 2003.
Roddick was defeated in the semi final round at the 2010 Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles tournament by the world number two Roger Federer in their first encounter since their epic grass court Grand Slam final two years ago in
London. It was his deepest penetration at a championship since making his way into the semi final in Cincinnati back in August.
The move up also put the American superstar in the race for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, which will start in twelve days.
The 1.88 meters tall, Roddick currently enjoys the eighth and last place in the championship's qualifying points standings, 335 points ahead of Robin Soderling, Rafael Nadal, Fernando Verdasco, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Novak
Djokovic. All of them have already qualified for the year-ending event.
Fernando dropped two positions from his career highest number seven after bundling out in the second round at the Valencia Open last week, falling in straight sets to the world number fifty-two Gilles Simon of France. He advanced
into the semi finals of the competition back in 2009. Moreover, the professional tennis ace from Spain was also pushed down in the rankings by his compatriot opponent David Ferrer, who triumphed in Valencia, beating Soderling in the final four and dispatching
off Marcel Granollers in the title battle.
Since losing to Fernando in an epic five-setter clash in the round of sixteen at the United States Open in New York, David Ferrer has gone 14-3, advanced at least into the semi finals of three competitions and overpowered Robin
twice.
Re-entering the top twenty on the very first occasion in two months is Sam Querrey from the United States of America, who currently stands at number twenty in the ATP list.
In spite of the fact that he was defeated in the opening round at the Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles tournament to Andy Roddick, Sam took full advantage of other contenders' inability to defend points. The greatest move inside
the top fifty came from the above-mentioned Marcel Granollers, who vaulted twenty-two positions to number forty-five with his final run at Valencia last week.
He is just one position away from his career highest ranking of world number 44, achieved last year.
The biggest move in the top hundred came from Ivan Dodig of Croatia, who sprang thirty places, from 118th to 88th, with his victory at Astana, Kazakhstan, worth 110 points.
