Andy Roddick ousts Rhyne Williams in round one – US Open 2012
Former world number one, Andy Roddick, displayed brilliant skills to outsmart his qualifying compatriot, Rhyne Williams, at the US Open, their home Grand Slam event. He notched up a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory against the world number 289 to secure a spot in the second round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Tuesday.
Seeded 20th in this event, Roddick re-ignited his old spark and stomped over Williams in their first encounter. He needed one hour and 58 minutes to progress into the round of 64 at this final Grand Slam event held in Queens.
"There is no 'acceptable result'," said the jubilant Roddick in an on-court interview after earning the glory. "You play your second round, try to win your second round. You go as far as you want. Or as far as you can. I don't think we think of it in the context of what's acceptable and what's not. You play a match to try and win a match."
The 2003 titlist, Roddick stepped into the Flushing Meadows in high spirits. He smoothly swiped his entire serves without facing any trouble and required a single break of serve to pull out the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Currently ranked 22nd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Roddick kept momentum running towards the follow-up set. He got the desiderated break in the opening game by cashing in the lone break opportunity. The American then hammered angled shots to keep his entire serve without facing any breakpoint and clicked the set with a 6-4 win.
The 29-year-old carried his winning ways in the third set and got the critical break in the opening game to take the initial lead. He swiped his entire serves after brushing off both breakpoints he faced and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to four.
Next in queue for Roddick is the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, who hit back to outrun Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq in four sets to set up this meeting. The Aussie teenager made a dismal start but stayed focused to carve out a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Berlocq.
