Andy Roddick outmuscles Andy Murray in the Miami Tennis Cup – Tennis News
American veteran, Andy Roddick, gave a straight sets defeat 6-2, 6-3 to the British number one, Andy Murray, in the Miami Tennis Cup exhibition match on the eve of Saturday.
Talking to the media Andy said, "If we had gone three sets I would've had a full body cramp and it would've been awkward for all of you. There's no comeback. Andy was nice to me tonight. I don't miss the travel. It's nice coming
here and seeing familiar faces. I still enjoy hitting tennis balls. I haven't lost any of the innocent parts of tennis."
The American right-hander, Roddick, was out of practise and has put on four pounds since his official retirement from the US Open, this September. In this exhibition match, the young Scot was unable to secure a lead even once in
the set. Murray followed his rival’s lead by 2-5 in the opener and was unable to contest forward to the American’s serves. Eventually, he surrendered to his serve in the eighth game and he was unable to stand up any further. In the second set, the pattern
continued with the same pace and Roddick advanced with a 5-3 lead. However, he double faulted twice and jumped up to bag away the last three points in the set.
In a post match interview Murray told the media, “Andy hasn't hit that many balls the last few months. Maybe his timing was a little bit off, but he still hits the ball very well. It was only months ago he was making a decent run
at the U.S. Open."
For the next match the American veteran will contest against the world number 11, Nicolas Almagro, in the final round on Sunday. The Spanish rival consolidated his straight sets success, 6-3, 6-4 against the 14th ranked
ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, John Isner.
The 30-year-old, Roddick, has prevailed over the Spanish challenger twice in straight sets on the hard courts. In the year 2010, they met each other at the Crandon Park at the quarterfinals of the Miami Master and in 2011 at the
Shanghai Masters.
