Andy Roddick overpowers Grigor Dimitrov in second round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Andy Roddick, American former world number one, defeated world No.72, Grigor Dimitrov in a hard hitting second round match of 2011 Shanghai Rolex Masters on Tuesday, 11th October 7-6(3), 7-5, in a long two hour and two
minutes hard court match.
Playing at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai, China, American world No.15 battled out hard before he could capitalize over the young, 20-year-old Bulgarian and make it into the 3rd round of the ATP Masters
1000 event. Although Roddick was predicted a win, he still had to work his way with his best shots to conquer the sizzling world No.72.
Anyhow, with the two walking down the court and the stands cheering up more for the American, Dimitrov won the toss and stood to serve the first game of the match. Serving out the first game, the lower ranked Bulgarian took out
his opening serve and led the start, 1-0.
Following with a win, Roddick levelled up instantly and switched back the serve, 1-1. With two equalizing each other’s lead, levelled up at 2-2, 3-3 and at 4-4 before the match flared up. Breaking each other in back-to-back games,
5-5, the two finally stuck up in a tiebreaker to decide the winner.
Serving out first Dimitrov ignited the first points, however, slowed down as Roddick mastered the tiebreaker, 7-3, winning the set 7-6(3) and commanded the match, 1-0.
Continuing with set two, Roddick opened up the set, however, fell short and dropped his opening serve, 0-1. Winning a triple game point winner, Dimitrov led the set start bagging the first two games, 2-0. World No.15 opened up
his side of the scoreboard winning game 3 to cut the lead down to 1-2, however, could not break back yet.
Extending his lead to 3-1, the 20-year-old kept the pressure on the former world No.1, however, Roddick built up his game and with scores at 2-4, the American finally struck. Serving out game 7, Roddick broke the world No.72 in
game 8 and levelled up the scores at 4-4.
Retaliating to the Americans move, Dimitrov struck back breaking the higher ranked opponent to lead again, 5-4. Hoping to level up the match scores, the 20-year-old served next and got blistered. Breaking back, Roddick levelled
up the scores at 5-5 and stood to serve again.
Bewildering the Bulgarian, Roddick served out game 11 and broke the lower ranked world No.72 in game 12, 7-5, winning the second set and the match in straight sets to walk off into the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Winning close in round 2, Roddick will now face, Nicolas Almagro, Spanish world No.11 and also seeded higher than the American, to battle it out for the quarter-final seat of the 2011 Shanghai Rolex Masters.
