Andy Roddick races past Rajeev Ram at Wimbledon
Andy Roddick has begun his latest attempt to win a Wimbledon title in some style, making light work of first round opponent Rajeev Ram with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
While defending champion Roger Federer seems to have developed a penchant for five set matches after last year’s epic final against the big-serving American (the top seed came back from two sets down against Alejandro Falla earlier in the day), Roddick took just three sets and 83 minutes to win his first round match.
Roddick served down 13 aces and hit 36 winners and looked sharp in his opening match, securing five break points for the match with a strong performance on return of serve against Ram.
All in all, it was a performance that suggested any cobwebs Roddick needed to blow out of his grass court game after losing to Dudi Sela at the Aegon Championships at the Queen’s Club have well-and-truly been blown away.
Roddick now faces Aegon International winner Michael Llodra in the second round, with the Frenchman taking up at Wimbledon where he’d left off in the Eastbourne final to take a four-set victory over the USA’s Jesse Witten in his opening match.
