Andy Roddick sails past Nicolas Almagro into quarterfinal – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Andy Roddick, World No.15 also seeded 8th for Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011, disrupted his 3rd round challenger, Spanish world No.11, Nicolas Almagro in just an hour and eleven minutes winning 6-3, 6-4, to jump
off into the quarterfinal round of the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Playing at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, China; Roddick crushed the Spanish with a cool and effortless win.
The pair walked down the blue circuit enjoying a loud roar and applause from the crowd as both players had equally matched support from the stands. Starting off with the opener, Roddick served out his first serve and rolled down
the scoreboard, 1-0.
Levelling up instantly, Almagro blazed out his first serve, 1-1. Rallying down games, the two levelled up at 2-2 again before Roddick ignited. Bombarding the world No.11 with a service winner, 3-2, the former world No.1 broke next
to extend his lead to 4-2.
With a comfortable lead, the American continued to dominate as he lashed out lightening forehands outplaying the Spaniard again in game 7 to lead the set 5-2. Almagro did cut the lead winning game 8, however, could not break back,
5-3.
With just one game left to bag, Roddick secured an easy win in the last game gunning down the Spaniard, 6-3, and moved on to the next set.
Almagro, world No.11, hoping to make a comeback, served out first for set 2 rolling down scoreboard 1-0. Levelling up next, Roddick hammered the second game, 1-1, a switched the serve back to the Spaniard. With the two winning
a game each, Almagro stood to serve game 5 next.
Breaking the Spaniard for the second time in the match, Roddick capitalized winning game 5 and serving out game 6 to lead the set 4-2. Frustrated and pressurized, Almagro took out game 7 saving a breakpoint to cut the lead down
to 3-4.
However, the Spaniard was unable to break the rock solid defence of the American. Bagging another win and gaining up closer to his win, the world No.15 stepped up the pedal and was left with just one more game to qualify into the
quarter-finals.
The 26-year-old higher ranked contender, Almagro, made a last attempt to serve-n-break, however, failed to do so as Roddick outgunned game 10, winning the set, 6-4, and the match in straight set, effortlessly.
Through into the quarterfinal round, Roddick now looks to play the third seeded Spaniard, David Ferrer.
