Andy Roddick slays Bernard Tomic in round two – US Open 2012
Seeded 20th in this event, Andy Roddick slaughtered the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, with a bagel at the Flushing Meadows 2012 on Friday. He jolted down a 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 success against Tomic, the only teenager in Top 100, to cruise into
the third round at this final Grand Slam event taking place in Queens, New York City.
The former world number one remained his spark lit at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He trashed his compatriot, Rhyne Williams, in straight sets in his opening match and required almost one and half hour to crush Tomic in their first match-up.
“It's certainly nice to feel appreciated at the end of all of it,” Roddick reflected on the massive fan showing at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. “It's a humbling feeling. You have twenty four and a half thousand people there to see something. It's a good feeling. Kind
of an outpouring of support from inside the tennis world and outside the tennis world in the last 24 hours is certainly not something that I expected to the lengths it's come from.”
The 30-year-old thundered into this major hard court event. He drew the first blood in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. Roddick easily bagged his remaining serves and clicked the opener with a 6-3 win in just under half hour. He plucked his entire
serves without facing any hindrance and converted one out of two break chances to his advantage.
Currently ranked 22nd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Roddick kept momentum sailing in the follow-up set. He smoothly swiped his entire serves without encountering any breakpoint and
cashed in the lone break chance in the ninth game to clinch the set with a 6-4 score line.
The veteran went berserk in the third set. He unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to reel off all six games and sealed the set with a bagel. Roddick again never faced any trouble while keeping his serves and capitalised on three out of four break chances
to steal the show.
Roddick is bidding to reach far at his last tournament here. He conquered the US Open in 2003 and is looking forward to repeat history.
The former champion will square off against Italy’s Fabio Fognini in the round of 32. Fognini eased past the Spanish contestant, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets to set-up this match.
