Andy Roddick stomps over Robin Haase in the opening round – Australian Open 2012
A former world number one, Andy Roddick, re-ignited his spark to crush the Dutch number one, Robin Haase, with a breadstick at the Australian Open 2012 on Tuesday. He formulated a 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 victory over the 24-year-old Dutch to advance into the second
round at this Grand Slam event held on the hard courts in Melbourne, Australia.
American super star, Andy Roddick, rekindled his 2004 form and trash the Dutch, ranked 53rd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, in straight sets at the Melbourne Park. The veterans previously
met each other at this tournament last year and after earning this victory, the American maintained his winning record against Haase.
Currently ranked 16th in the ATP rankings, Roddick comfortably entered the opening set and drew the first blood in the second game to go 2-0 up. Regardless of losing his edge in the very next game, the American remained firm in the set and broke
Haase’s serve again in the eighth game. He eventually sealed the opener by winning six games to three.
Fifteenth seed kept momentum rolling into the second set and quickly swiped in entire serves without facing any breakpoint. He required only a single breakpoint which he duly converted to his advantage in the fifth game, subsequently clinching the set with
a 6-4 score line.
Roddick went insane in the third set as he fired powerful groundstrokes to reel off opening four games in a row. After Haase kept his serve for the first time in the fifth game, the American wiped out the last two games as well and earned a breadstick in
just under half an hour.
The American number two outshined Haase completely as he clobbered a better first serve share and clicked tremendous 41 out of 56 points on it. He spilled 20 unforced errors as opposed to the Dutch’s 32 and fired massive 35 winners to prevail.
Up next for the high flying American is the winner of the match between a local wild card entrant, Lleyton Hewitt, and German competitor, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe. Roddick needs to improve his game and reduce his errors in order to overpower the Australian veteran
who is the crowd favourite.
