Andy Roddick suffers a loss at the Cincinnati Open due to injury – Tennis News
16th seeded American, Andy Roddick received a shocking upset at the hands of the French, Jeremy Chardy, in the first round of the Western and Southern Open by 7-6, 6-3 on Tuesday. The former world
number one struggled hard to secure a win in match but failed miserably as his performance was considerably sloppier than usual. His serve velocity was relatively lower throughout and was broken twice by the underdog ranked 38th in
the ATP World Rankings.
Chardy successfully attained four aces and sustained an excellent game plan with no double faults. Roddick had high first serve rate of 61 percent than his rival but he made four double faults at critical moments in the game,
ultimately leading to his failure.
After the fierce tiebreaker round between the two, the American had to undergo a treatment for his injured back in the second set of the match. He secured 15 of 62 return points, whereas the 25-year-old Frenchman secured
twice, 30 out of 75 points, to get the better of him.
Previously, Roddick has contested at the Atlanta and Eastbourne tournament, which indicated his excellent run of form for the Cincinnati Open. However, after his brutal defeat, he surely needs to reconsider his participation
at the Winston-Salem. He has also jeopardized his seed in the US Open this year, starting on Monday and this must just affect his current year’s rankings.
In an interview with the media, Roddick said, “I don't know yet. You know, we're going to have to figure this thing out. I don't have all the answers for it yet. I felt fine early on, and then I had one lunge forehand and,
we have all had it, your back kind of goes out or spasms a little bit. It got progressively worse. In a perfect world I'd love to play next week. I feel like I'd benefit from that. That's what we're going to try to do.”
Nonetheless, the 29-year-old champion still believes in striving for his lost glory. He is extremely passionate about tennis career and aims to adopt a more aggressive stance after his quick recovery.
