Former world number one, Andy Roddick, produced result under pressure with his ankle severely injured at the SAP Open on Wednesday. He strained past the Ukrainian contestant, Denis Kudla, to book a berth in the quarter-final of
the tournament.
Roddick was already suffering from a right hamstring injury and this unfortunate incident doubled his grieves. He was running across the court at the baseline and whilst he stretched out to reach for a difficult return, he crumbled
over and rolled on the floor; signalling to his box to send a physio. Everyone thought that this was the end of another promising start for the American who has been pulling out of tournaments for several injury issues. It looks like he needs to take a considerable
rest before making a comeback into the tennis circuit so that he feels fit and plays on top of his game.
In a post-match interview, Kudla stated, “I thought that was it. The look on his face looked like it hurt a lot.” He was pointing towards the incident that injured Roddick’s ankle during the match. The American showed immense courage
to resume the proceedings and fought through pain to win the contest. It was a remarkable performance and very beneficial for the youngsters who pull out of tournaments for minor injuries.
Roddick stated, “The best thing I did was just exist out there. When you first go down, you don't know how it's going to feel until you take those first couple steps; unfortunately, it's become all too familiar recently. I didn't
want to stop. I'm really sick of doing that.”
He is the fan favourite at the Bay Arena and luckily for him, his rocket-paced serves found the right spot that dismantled the confidence of her opponent. Kudla was stunned to witness Roddick stepping back into the court to continue
the contest after such a brutal blow to his ankle. The American smashed 14 aces in the match and waits for the winner of the match between Denis Istomin and Michael Russell.
Good news for Roddick fans is that he is not playing on Thursday because Istomin and Russell will battle and the American will take rest that will help him recover from his fresh injury. He believes that his best is yet to come.
History shows that after an ugly start to the tournament; he always produces best results so his fans are still hopeful of him.
