Andy Roddick thrashes Andreas Seppi to capture title – AEGON International 2012
Seeded sixth in the draw, Andy Roddick of USA brought out his best game, as he breezed past the defending champion, Andreas Seppi of Italy, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the AEGON International final in Eastbourne, England.
The American needed just an hour and 12 minutes to topple Seppi in a one sided match.
Roddick did not allow the Italian to settle down in the match, claiming a breakthrough in the opening game of the match and consolidating on it to take a 2-0 lead. The next six games went with serve to take the score to 5-3 in
favour of the American. Serving to stay in the set at that moment, Seppi could not handle the pressure and lost it 3-6.
In the second set, Roddick gained lead early once again, snatching a break in the second game and held his following serve to go up 3-0. The end was quite similar to the first one, as Seppi failed to hold when he served to stay
in the set at 2-5 and went down 2-6.
Ranked 25th in the world, Roddick inflicted most damage on his opponent with the help of the aggressive relies to the Italian’s serves, clinching a total of 55 percent return points in the match.
Talking to the reporters after the contest, a relieved Roddick said, “I don't remember the last time I got broken twice and won 3 and 2. I felt real good. My returns this week were close to as well as I have. I was able to close
well.”
Roddick matched Roger Federer’s record of winning at least one title for 12 consecutive year, capturing his maiden crown at the Citi Open back in 2001. The right-hander captured only one title last year, when he defeated Milos
Raonic in three sets 7-6(7), 6-7(11), 7-5 to win the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.
He added, “I wanted to keep alive winning one tournament a year for 12 years. I know three or four people have done that. I need to remind myself of those numbers just to [remember] this is a what-did-you-do-last-week-type sport?
So looking back on that, maybe I need to look at those a little bit more and realise that I've done this for a long time pretty well.”
After winning the AEGON International, Roddick took his career title tally to 31. The American became only the second active player after Federer to have 600 match wins, when he won the semi-final here.
