Andy Roddick undoes David Ferrer to sit in the quarterfinals – US Open 2011
After a two day rain delay, the US Open 2011 wrapped up with its remaining 4th round matches on Thursday, 8th September. One of the 4th round matches played at the USTA Billie Jean King National
Tennis Center was the electrifying battle between Andy Roddick, world No.21 and the Spanish bullfighter, David Ferrer. Knowing the fact that the Spaniard outranked him, the former world No. 1 had his best weapons up and running. Surviving a mid match lapse,
Roddick was able to secure 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over the Spaniard.
The match started off with Roddick taking the lead in the first set; however, the match was once again suspended due to showers just after 16 minutes of the play. With the American dissatisfied with the condition of the court,
the match referee decided to shift the match to court 13.
Surprisingly, court 13 has a capacity of 584 people; however, it went over crowded even before the players had stepped inside the blue circuit. The fixture had already started on the previous court. Opening with serving first Roddick
had lead 3-1 with a breakpoint win and continued on court 13.
With the play finally underway after an hour break, the American eased two more serves to take away the opening set of the match 6-3.
A wobbly service game by the Spaniard in the opening game of the second set gave a breakpoint opportunity to the 2003 champion here, who took full advantage unleashing a forehand winner down the line. While the 5th seed
constantly struggled on the fast court, Roddick did not face a single breakpoint in the first two sets of the match.
With his consistent perfectionist play, the local lad once again broke early and took of flying in the start. With scores at 3-5, Ferrer did manage to pull it off back to 4-5, however, could not finish it off as the American took
a commanding two set lead.
Starting off with the 3rd set, Ferrer finally pulled off and saved a straight set loss. Serving first, the Spaniard had an early break in game 2 and took a comfortable 4-1 lead. Overpowering the American in two more
serves, the Spaniard took away the set winning 6-3 and onto the fourth set.
With Roddick hanging on for one more set, the 29-year-old rolled down the scoreboard first with the Spaniard equalling the scores immediately. The two levelled up again at 2-2 before the Spaniard gave a shocker. Breaking the American,
Ferrer took the lead 3-2, however, could not hold up and lost a breakpoint serving next, 3-3.
With Roddick winning game 7, Ferrer served at 3-4. A break from the net cord gave the former world No.1 a breakpoint chance. With a down-the-line winner in game 8, Roddick thrashed the final game of the match, serving out the match.
Doing away with Ferrer, the American winner now sits in the quarter-finals to face another Spaniard, Rafael Nadal for a spot in the semis.
