Andy Roddick’s farewell at the Arthur Ashe – Tennis News
Tears were all around the Arthur Ashe and everyone giving a standing ovation to a man who gave everything to the world of sporting tennis, Andy Roddick. The former world number one called it off in the fourth round of the US Open
Championship at New York.
The bronze medallist, Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina, was his last opponent who defeated him in four sets but not before witnessing a mammoth crowd at the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, New York; cheering up the American
superstar to fight back into the match to extend his career further.
Roddick saved a match point in the ninth game of the fourth set and went on to hold serve and force his opponent to win the battle in the 10th game. Parents and his wife, Brooklyn Decker, was there at the arena; weeping.
In a post-match interview, Del Potro showed immense respect to the American legend and stated that it’s not his day despite the victory. Roddick is retiring and all concentration should be placed on the man of the day. He didn’t
even celebrate the victory instead pointed at the 30-year-old American to thank him for all the accomplishments in the world of tennis.
Roddick stated, “I fell right on the back end of the golden generation, and so that was just the cards that were dealt.” He further added, “But as tough a situation as it is, in the grand scheme of things it's a dream. There were
a lot of tough moments but unbelievable moments. I mean, who gets to play in Wimbledon finals and who gets to play in an Open and who gets to be part of a winning (Davis Cup) team? Most people don't get to experience that."
He represented United States of American on different platforms and there were a whole lot of expectations coming from the fans just because he belonged to the most terrific tennis playing continent. Roddick said, “I wasn't going
to shy away from it, for sure. I mean, you get knocked down. You know the burden. I understand it.” He took the responsibility and made a mark in the history by becoming the number one player in the world.
Tennis platform will definitely miss a character like Roddick. He was fast, accurate and funny; never ever missed any opportunity to erupt humour. Not a lot of players have that ability to stay focused yet joke about things. He
is definitely a legend and a future Hall of Famer.
