Andy Schleck commented on Alberto Contador’s two-year ban
Luxembourg cyclist Andy Schleck commented on the news of a two-year ban implementation on Alberto Contador. He stated that it is a sad moment for the sport and there is no reason to be happy for any one whosoever.
Schleck finished 39 seconds behind the Spaniard to claim the second position during the Tour de France 2010.
CAS has imposed a two-year ban on the cyclist on account of his positive tests during the French Grand Tour and had him stripped off his Tour win.
Andy has, hence, been declared as the overall winner of the race, which has always been his ultimate dream.
Andy commented on the ban, “First of all I feel sad for Alberto. I always believed in his innocence. This is just a very sad day for cycling. The only positive news is that there is a verdict after 566 days of uncertainty. We can finally move on”.
Andy started his professional career with Team CSC in 2005 and rode with the side for a period of six years.
He moved to Luxembourg professional team, Leopard Trek, in 2011 and will ride with the side for the season ahead.
The 26-year-old holds as many as seven Grand Tour appearances to his credit, including one Giro, four Tours and one Vuelta a Espana participation.
He finished second during the Tour de France 2009, 2010 and 2011.
While commenting about the 2010 Tour de France, Schleck explained that he gave his best shot during the race but ultimately fell short of the Spaniard.
He said, “I trust that the CAS judges took all things into consideration after reading a 4,000 page file. If now I am declared overall winner of the 2010 Tour de France it will not make me happy. I battled with Contador in that race and I lost”.
He explained that winning the French Grand tour has always been the biggest dream of his life and he want to win the race on the track and not in the court.
Andy stated that he will try his best to win the Tour de France 2012 and will consider it as his first victory of the event.
Contador will now return to professional cycling on August 5th, 2012, and will miss the Tour de France, Giro d’ Italia and the London Olympics for the season ahead.
