Andy Schleck shares his disappointment on missing the World Championships 2011 – Cycling News
Andy Schleck has recently commented that his tooth infection started at the recent Tour de France as he lost his filling while riding at the event. His tooth injury has prevented him from participating at the World Championships and the Luxembourg rider
also had to miss other events because of the same reason.
Andy was advised by his team doctor and the dentist to take more rest and not to participate at the World Championships as there is a danger of infecting a heart muscle if he continued to ride in this condition. Schleck had to withdraw from the USA Pro Cycling
Challenge in Colorado soon after the infection and also had to miss the Canadian road races, GP de Montreal and GP de Quebec.
The 26-year-old mentioned that he was keen to participate at the World’s event and had always made his nation proud through many wins as he said, “I absolutely don't make up stories in order not to participate in the World Championships, which is always
a great moment in the career of any athlete. I feel I have always represented Luxembourg during my big successes, like the stage wins at the Tour de France.”
Andy’s unavailability puts more responsibilities on his Brother Frank’s shoulders as he will have to lead the Luxembourg team at the World Championships 2011. The only replacement for Andy was Bob Jungles but team’s management has decided to enter the event
with 5 riders instead of 6 including Frank Schleck, Christian Poos, Ben Gastauer, Laurent Didier and Jempy Drucker. Michel Hubsch, Tom Schwarmes, Gilles Heymes, Christophe Braun, and Antoine Mores will represent Luxembourg Junior Men’s Team in the event while
Christine Majerus, Fabienne Schauss, Chantal Hoffmann and Nathalie Lamborelle will form the Luxembourg Women’s Team for the World Championships 2011.
On commenting on his condition Andy stated to Tageblatt.lu, “Both my dentist and the team doctor advised me against participating in the World Championships.” Andy Schleck currently holds the 12th spot in the UCI World Tour individual rankings
as he has scored 252 points while his brother is at 8th position with 284 points. Frank Schleck finished the Tour de France 2011 third with 2 minutes and 30 seconds behind the race winner Cadel Evans and it will be interesting to see if he can secure
some wins for Luxembourg at Copenhagen.
