I'm gonna have jaw surgery because I have a overbite,

and whenever I think about it, I have a werid feeling in my tummy.

I dream about being put under..like how I have NO control over my body and how i cant breath like i'm dying.!

the guy that is putting the mask on me said that I wont have any tube down my throat cuz i'm having jaw surgery so how is this possible for me to breath? and he said that they will put tape on my eyes?

i'm very freaked out..first time!

its also because my surgeon and the guy putting me to sleep are guys, I don't feel comfortable about guys then girl doctors/nurses i don't know why!!!!

And I have a big huge fear for needles..i'm nervous that shake before they do anything.

so my questions are..

do you dream?

when they put the mask on so you feel like your dying?

and for mouth surgery..if they dont put a tube down to help you breath then what will?!!

why do they tape your eyes?

Thankss anything would help. :)

if you want you can share stories !!

  1. well i've never had jaw surgery but i have had ankle surgery where i had to be put to sleep. Soo to answer your questions i've never heard of anyone dreaming before and i know i didnt dream when i was put under. Its like the nights when you dont dream at all jus sleep. You dont feel like your dying when they put the mask on. && most likely they will give you a oxygen mask...that's what i had too. && i have absolutely no idea why they tape your eyes but im pretty sure they wont put the tape on your eyes until after your sleep and they'll take it off before you're awake. so your anxiousness is normal but just follow their precautions and im sure everything will go great! =]

  2. I recently had surgery on my mouth and had used anesthesia to knock me out.  If you are nervous about the doctors being male you could always ask if a female nurse can stand in the room for a while during the setup and things of that sort. also, if they are doing mouth surgery it would not make sense for them to put something over the area where they will be operating.

with the breathing, at least at my surgery, they put one of those oxygen tube things on your nose and have you hooked up to machines to make sure that your heart is beating.

i am horrified of needles and so what i did when they put my iv in for the anesthesia is i looked away and had a conversation with one of the nurses so that i would not be thinking about it.

  3. You have agreed to have this surgery so you must trust your doctor.  (I have many issues with medical doctors but....), so here's some info that I hope helps you out.

ANY surgery is risky.  This is why they call it the practice of medicine.

Normally they give you something to make you relax (loopy) before they put you out, so just relax and go along for the ride.

Normally, you go to sleep and then you wake up, and it seems like minutes have passed.  As for losing control of you body, yeah,  it's a little freaky.  And nerves are crazy before you go in.  I've had numerous surgeries, and the experiences on all of them have been different.  But the nurses in recovery have got to be the kindest, most gentle people I know.

I would say, relax, enjoy it and you're probably in pain, so afterwards it should be better.

I've had so many medical things happen, that the fear of needles is all but gone.  I could probably do an IV on my own.....

Just relax, and ask your doctor to give you something to calm you down.
