Anett Kontaveit ousts Victoria Duval in semis – US Open Girls’ Singles 2012
Seeded 12th in the tournament, Anett Kontaveit, stomped over the local wild card entrant, Victoria Duval, in straight sets at the Girls Singles event of US Open 2012 on Saturday. She juggled up a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory against her fellow 16-year-old
to book a spot in the final round at this major hard court event taking place in New York City, United States.
The Estonian seed displayed tremendous skills and abilities to outrun Duval in their first outing. She needed one hour and 15 minutes to earn the glory and progress into the final show down at this last of the four Grand Slam events taking place from 27th
August to 9th September.
Kontaveit made a powerful entry at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. She drew the first blood in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. The Estonian swiped her remaining serves with poise and capitalised on another break chance in the
last game to clinch the opener with a 6-2 score line.
Ranked 480th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Kontaveit lost her track towards the proceeding set. She suffered the first blow in the opening game to trail at 0-1. Apart from recovering in the very next game, the Estonian
lost her serve again and fell at 1-3. However, she remained focused and not only snatched her break back in the sixth game but also exchanged a serve break in the last two games to drag the set to a tie-breaker. Kontaveit prevailed in it and consequently bagged
the set with a 7-6(4) success.
Overall, the Estonian clobbered an equal first serve share of 63 per cent and amazingly clicked 26 out of 39 points on it. She also spilled fewer unforced errors and finished the match with 72 points.
Next in line for Kontaveit is another local wild card recipient, Samantha Crawford, who upset fourth seed Antonia Lottner in a three-set thriller to set up this meeting. The American underdog lost the opening set but pulled out the equaliser with a breadstick.
In the final set, Crawford maintained her intensity and eventually carved out a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 success.
