Anett Kontaveit upsets Denka Kovinic in the third round of Girls’ Singles – French Open 2011
Anett Kontaveit of Estonia upset sixth seed Denka Kovinic of Montenegro in their third round clash. Kontaveit took down her opponent in an enthralling three-setter, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, taking two hours and five minutes to book a berth
in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam event.
The back-and-forth affair provided a brilliant display of quality tennis from the two competitors on the clay courts of Paris, France. Kontaveit drew first blood by bagging the opening set to get early advantage in the contest
but a terrific comeback from her opponent in the very next set brought the game back on even terms, with both contestants winning one set a piece. It all came down to the final set and after an enthralling competition, the Estonian finally wrapped up victory
in the third set to move on to the final eight of the tournament.
Kontaveit was brilliant with her first serve, delivering 71 percent of it on target, but committed seven double faults in the process of over achieving the serve points. Kontaveit’s opponent was better than her in terms of securing
first serve points but the overall points winning proficiency of the Estonian brought her out as a winner in the end.
Plenty of break chances were crafted by both players but Kontaveit excelled over her rival by converting more opportunities in the contest. She cashed in eight of her 19 break points, whereas Kovinic followed her by converting
seven of her 20 break opportunities in the matchup.
The Estonian was off to a flyer in the opener, breaking early to exert pressure upon her opponent in the contest. Kovinic was up to the task and struck two out of nine serve breaks to remain competitive in the competition but she
was dominated by the sheer brilliance of Kontaveit, who stung three serve breaks to close the first set at 6-3.
The sixth seed finally got her touch back in the next set and launched a series of attacking moves on the Estonian opponent. Her two break points secured the second set in her favour at 6-3 to level the contest at 1-1.
An enthralling decisive set was witnessed, with a total number of seven serve breaks from both opponents. Kontaveit eventually sealed victory in the 12thgame, settling the score at 7-5 to qualify for the quarter-final
stage of Roland Garros. She now will take on the second seed Russian, Irina Khromacheva, who made it to the quarter-finals after defeating Donna Vekic of Croatia in the third round encounter.
