Angel McCoughtry, Lindsey Harding, Tina Charles: Top WNBA players from August 19 games
Only one game took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Friday, August 19, 2011.
Four players reached double figures, including with double-double by Angel McCoughtry, as Atlanta Dream edged past Connecticut Sun, 94-88, in overtime at Philips Arena. With this victory, the Dream increased their current winning
streak to three games in a row.
Here is an overview of some of the noticeable performances on the night:
Angel McCoughtry
Angel McCoughtry posted yet another decent performance in Atlanta’s third consecutive victory. The 24-year-old forward came up with the key plays on both ends of the floor, finishing with a game high 26 points and 12 rebounds.
The player also dished out four assists, stole the ball for three times and blocked two shots, including a crucial one at the end of the fourth quarter to force overtime.
McCoughtry, who was WNBA Rookie of the Year 2009, scored six of her points in overtime. McCoughtry was 9 for 22 from the field and 8 for 12 from free throw line in more than 35 minutes.
Atlanta coach Marynell Meadors acknowledged the superb performance of McCoughtry and said, “She is a winner,” “She finds a way to score and she finds a way to defend. That block she made at the end of the game was huge.”
Lindsey Harding
Lindsey Harding enjoyed one of her best performances of the season with 21 points, including 11 of them in the second half. Harding also dished out five assists and had two steals in the victory. The point guard shot 10 for 14
from the field in more than 43 minutes of action.
Sancho Lyttle
Atlanta’s forward Sancho Lyttle has also stepped up and played like a team leader. The 27-year-old racked up 20 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists, stole the ball twice and blocked one shot for her team.
Lyttle hit a terrific shot from downtown with 12 seconds to go in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 78 for good, sending the game into overtime. The player hit 7 for 10 from the field and 5 for 6 from the line.
Erika de Souza
Erika de Souza recorded a double-double in the Dream’s victory, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. De Souza blocked four shots of her conference rivals and had two steals in more than 36 minutes.
Asjha Jones
Asjha Jones led the Sun in their second consecutive loss. Jones tallied 21 points on a 9 for 24 shooting from the field and pulled down nine rebounds.
Tina Charles
Tina Charles recorded a double-double in the losing effort with 11 rebounds and 15 points. It was the third straight double-double of the 22-year-old centre.
Charles, who is averaging 17.8 points and 11.0 rebounds per game so far in this season, also blocked five shots, dished out three assists and stole the ball twice. She was 6 for 13 from the floor and 3 for 5 from free throw line.
