Angel McCoughtry drops 33; Atlanta Dream edge Washington Mystics 86-79: WNBA Recap
On Wednesday night, Angel McCoughtry erupted with a season-high 33 points as Atlanta Dream topped the Washington Mystics 86-79 and headed into this weekend's All-Star break on a three game-winning streak.
McCoughtry also contributed three rebounds, three assists and three steals in the victory. Additionally, the 24-year-old forward also set season highs with 10 field goals, 11 free throws in 17 attempts.
Lindsey Harding scored 14 points while Armintie Price had 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for the reigning Eastern Conference champions. Erika de Souza contributed 10 points and four rebounds while Sandora
Irvin came off the bench with 11 rebounds for Dream, who have won three of their previous five games. Alison Bales also pulled down 10 rebounds for Atlanta.
Crystal Langhorne led the Mystics with 24, on a 10 for 18 shooting from the field and 4 for 5 from free throw line points and 10 rebounds. The 24-year-old forward also dished out five assists and had three steals. Marissa Coleman
punctuated 21 points on 8 for 14 shooting from the field, including 5 of 8 from three-pointer range. Matee Ajavon added 12 points and four assists while Jasmine Thomas posted 10 points for the Mystics, who have lost six of their previous seven games.
Nicky Anosike, who had 29 points in Washington’s victory against Atlanta on June 9, was limited to just five points this time. However, she still proved to be a force on the glass and finished the night with a game-high 14 rebounds.
Atlanta shot 49.2 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from free throw line while Washington shot just 41.9 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from the line.
Dream scored the first four points of the game and held a 9-4 lead, before Mystics charged back. Their surge was capped by Langhorne, who drove to the rim with 04:51 to go in the first period to tie the game at 13. In the minutes
that followed, Dream managed to take a one-point lead, 19-18, with 47 seconds remaining. Langhorne however scored four straight points in the last 31 seconds and gave the Mystics a 22-19 lead, going into the second period.
Dream fought back in the second quarter and tied the game at 34 with 02:55 left in the first half. Langhorne responded with a pair of free throws to put Washington ahead by 36-33, however, Dream responded with five points in the
closing minutes of the half, at the end of which, they led the Mystics by one.
The Mystics turned the heat on in the third quarter and sprinted to a seven-point lead, 63-56, with 01:18 to go in the quarter. However, Dream bounced back with seven unanswered points in the last minute of the frame and tied the
game at 63, heading into the last period.
Atlanta steadied the Mystics late in the game and went on a 10-1 run in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter to walk away with perhaps their most impressive win of this season.
