Angel McCoughtry pounds 35; Atlanta Dream take down the Connecticut Sun 85-74 – WNBA Recap
On Tuesday night, Angel McCoughtry pounded a game-high 35 points to guide Atlanta Dream past Connecticut Sun 85-74 at Philips Arena.
This was Atlanta’s third win in a row. The Eastern Conference Defending Champions have now moved into the third place in the conference with a 19-14 record. For Sun, the loss snapped a two-game winning streak. They have now slipped
to a game behind the first-placed Indiana Fever.
McCoughtry also grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked three shots of the opponent team. The 6 ft 1 in forward shot 12 for 23 from the field and 10 for 13 from free throw line.
Atlanta coach Marynell Meadors praised the brilliant performance of McCoughtry and said, “She was superb,” “When the stakes are high, she is at her best. She has played well against Connecticut. She has shot the ball very well
every time we have played them. She is just really a great player.”
Sancho Lyttle recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds and 12 points while Iziane Castro Marques came off the bench with 11 points in the victory.
Connecticut’s centre Tina Charles registered her 22nd double-double of this season with 17 points and 12 boards, matching the league record she set last year. Charles also blocked three shots and ended the game on an
8 for 19 shooting from the field. Renee Montgomery had 16 points, seven assists and four steals while Kara Lawson added 11 points in the loss.
Dream shot 42.3 percent from the floor and limited Connecticut to 40.3 percent. In addition to that, Atlanta grabbed 47 rebounds while Sun pulled down only 37 on the glass.
Atlanta scored the first seven points of the game and held a 13-9 lead with 05:41 to go in the first quarter. Sun retaliated with an 11-2 run at that point and went ahead by 20-15. Dream however scored five consecutive points in
the last 53 seconds of the quarter and tied the game at 20.
Atlanta had the better of the second frame and keyed by McCoughtry they took a 48-42 advantage at the interval. Dream pushed their lead to 12 points, 57-45, early in the third quarter and carried a 66-55 lead into the last quarter.
From there on, it was a stalemate as both teams scored 19 points in the fourth to end the game.
