Angel McCoughtry stars on comeback as Atlanta Dream get past Connecticut Sun – WNBA Recap
On Sunday night Angel McCoughtry came off the bench to rack up 24 points as she helped Atlanta Dream record an 87-80 victory over Connecticut Sun at the Philips Arena.
McCoughtry, coming after a disciplinary suspension, played only 19:26 minutes in the game and shot the ball 8 off 14 from the field. At the same time, Sancho Lyttle and Erika de Souza both notched up a double-double performance.
Lyttle chipped in with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Erika contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Connecticut’s efforts were led by 16 points from Kara Lawson. Danielle McCray provided good support off the bench by racking up 15 while Renee Montgomery and Tina Charles managed to conjure up 13 and 11 points respectively.
Atlanta outrebounded Connecticut 43-32 with 14 of them coming at the offensive end which allowed them easy second chance points. Connecticut shot the ball 42.9% from the field while Atlanta fared slightly better as they converted
44.6% of their chances.
Both teams got off to a good start to the game as they stayed equally competitive throughout the first quarter. A 7-0 run in between the period allowed Atlanta to take a 4 point lead – an advantage they were able to attain at the
end of the first quarter as they led 20-16.
Connecticut scored 4 quick points to start the second quarter which made the scores level, However, a 6-0 response from the Dream saw them create some kind of separation. But the Sun’s were not giving up as they scored the next
7 points of the ball game and took the lead right out of Atlanta’s hands. After playing out a very competitive first half, both sides remained level pegging at 39.
Atlanta came out strong to start the third quarter as they opened up with a 7-3 run. But Connecticut, were right back at it as they responded with a 9-0 run to take the advantage back. It seemed as though both sides were taking
turns to get their offence going which resulted in the scores being level at 58 before heading into the final quarter.
Things remained close throughout the final period as well and the game wasn’t decided until the final seconds. A 6-2 run to end the quarter allowed Atlanta a 7 point lead while holding Connecticut scoreless in the final minutes
ensured their victory.
