Angel Pagan’s homer helps New York Mets defeat St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 – MLB Update
New York Mets’ centre-fielder, Angel Pagan put in a tremendous effort with the bat as he went 1-for-5 with an average of .239 and hit a decisive homer in the Mets’ 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field, New York on July 20.
The Cardinals led off with 1-0 in the very first inning when Matt Holliday hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and Skip Schumaker scored a single run. At the top of the second inning, Colby Rasmus struck-out looking and Daniel Descalso struck-out swinging.
Similarly, Daniel Murphy flied out to centre-field and Pagan was grounded out to pitcher at the bottom of the second inning.
In the third inning, the Cardinals exploded three quick runs to advance their lead while the Mets also opened their scoring account by posting two runs and reduced their lead 4-2. Jon Jay was grounded out to second base but Kyle McClellan scored a single
run. The second run was taken by Schumaker when Holliday doubled off deep right-field. Lance Berkman singled to centre-field and Holliday added the third run to the Cardinals’ score-card.
On the other hand, Josh Thole doubled to deep centre-field and Lucas Duda contributed the first run for the Mets. The second run was taken by Thole when R.A. Dickey singled off left-field. During the fourth inning, the batters failed to connect the tricky
throws of the pitchers. Dickey was expensive with the ball as he permitted four runs on eight hits and threw just over six innings with an ERA of 3.80. He struck-out only four batters on his 93 pitches.
The game was tied 4-all in the fifth inning when Carlos Beltran struck a two-run homer (421 feet) towards right-field and Jose Reyes scored a tie run. In the sixth and seventh inning, the batters were unable to put runs and got out on an infield positions.
Gerald Laird reached towards third base on a single hit and Holliday added the leading run for the Cardinals at the top of the eighth while Pagan posted a tie run on the single-run shot of Thole towards left-centre to level the game 5-5, at the bottom of
the eighth inning.
In the additional 10th inning, Pagan struck a tie-breaking homer (395 feet) towards right-field to give the Mets a 6-5 lead. However, the Mets led off the three-game series 2-0 after earning an exciting win.
