  1. yr tank should be the height of 18inchs 45 cms as angel fish grow big to 5inchs 12.5 cms so having 3 angel fish in a 20 gallon tank it  will be full in the tank when they reach to adult hood angel fish are good when shoaling when young

  2. 20 gallons is not big enough for 3 adult angelfish.

you could put 3 babies in there but angels will pair up and kill an "intruder" as adults a single pair of angel fish need AT LEAST 29 gallons.

angel fish will eat anything that fits in their mouth they are cichlids!

so no cardina, glowlight, neon or other small tetras, larger tetras are ok but MUST be kept in a school of at least 5 so they wont nip the angelfish fins!

i have a 29 gallon angel tank and heres whats in it:

a single pair of young adult angel fish.

    6 panda cory

    3 otto

    6 pristella tetra.

the tetra add movment to the tank and help "fill it up"

but im also over my bioload with that and because of it running DOUBLE filtration with a canister AND hang on the back filter! it also requires weekly water changes.

20 gallon is REALY not big enough, youd have to get rid of one and upgrade to a 29 at least within 6 months....a 55 if you want to keep all 3 angels.

  3. Angel Fish need a tall tank or at the least a big tank.  29 Gallons or more is suggested.  For 3 or more go for a 40 Gallon Tall or even up to a 55 Gallon.  I have seen 3 Angels in a 29 Gallon, but tank was well planted and they seemed content...yet they were quite young and small.  Owner ended up transferring them to a bigger tank...as they grew.

As far other fish.  There are many other fish...for a 20 Gallon Tank.

A kind of similar shaped fish maybe.  Black Skirt Tetra or "Fruit" Skirt Tetra (Blue or Pink) are kind of triangular shaped.  Tiger Barbs are also.

One school of 5 of these would be good.  Throw in about 3 Cory Cats and a Mystery Snail and you will have a full tank.

Angels and Tiger Barbs are considered semi-aggressive.  Black Skirt Tetra and the other Skirted Tetra are also known to be fin nippers.

To address some of the comments...Red Tail Sharks are cool...and get up to 6 inches...but one of these species per tank...and a 30 would be better.  Ghost Knifes need 100 Gallons...they grow to be up to 20 inches.  Why not Kissing Gourami with Angels?  Kissing Gourami can grow 8 inches to possibly 12 inches.  I have had one for about 2 years now and he is 7 to 8 inches now and with Angels and they dont bother each other at all.  Gourami can be semi-aggressive and are usually aggressive to other Gourami....they are in the same family as Betta's and are particulary aggressive if you have just 2 males...and even with 3 you could see the stronger 2 going for the less dominate one.  However, 1 "big" Gourami per tank under 55 Gallons....they need room and some plant cover.  Bala Sharks need at least 75 Gallons and school in a group of 3 or more.  They grow to be 18 inches.

You have a great tank for a variety of fish.  Just kind of rethink what you can do with it untill you can get the tank appropiate enough for you fish to be content.

    Best of Luck!

  4. I suggest you also get a blue gourami. Gouramis and angel fish will get along well because they are both fairly aggressive. I would watch out if you want to get little fish. Gouramis are very territorial, and it's worse in a small tank. The last time I had one he would kill all of my tetras and then store them near the filter. I would watch him too. Quite a sight. Anyway I think that you should get fish that match the angel fish's personality. Since you only have a 20gal tank, I suggest you maybe only get two more large fish and 1-2 smaller fish. You could expand your tank to about 50gal and then get a bigger variety of fish. Angelfish go along well with larger varieties of tetras. For further questions please email.

    Good luck!

  5. There are lots of other fish that will go well with angelfish.  Since your tank is only 20 gallons I think a small school of small tetras (5-6) would be fine and maybe 2 cory cats.  Or, you could get just one angelfish, a small school of tetras, 2-3 cory cats, and a dwarf gourami.

If you are really set on angelfish know that 3 adult angelfish need a bigger tank than 20 gallons and that you will need to upgrade to a 29 gallon or even better a 55 gallon fairly soon in order to accomodate them. Best of Luck!

  6. 20 gallons is a bit too small, but if you got, say, 29 gallons, or 35 or 55 gallons, you could get a variety of gouramis (but not kissing gouramis) small black ghost knifefish, small bala and red-tailed sharks, a variety of colors of mollies, platies, and variatus, and some of the more active species of tetras and of danios, Such as Black tetras or zebra danios. Right now, if you got three angelfish, you would only have room for, say, about 2 more big fish and up to 4 more small fish.
