Angela Maurer earns top place in Women’s overall ranking: 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup – Part 2
After the completion of Santos leg of the championship, the open water athletes laid their eyes on the next stop of the 2011 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Cancun, Mexico on April 30.
Maurer’s sixth finish in the initial race produced a troubling wave in her fans, as they wanted to see on her on the victory stand in Brazil. With just 12 days to go for Cancun, she buckled up her preparations to elevate her standings at the second stop
of World Cup series.
Finally, the race day came and unlike the energetic participations of 32 open water athletes, only 17 swimmers showed interest in reaching the podium in Mexico. Subsequently, there was a little change in competition as Argentina’s Cecilia Biagioli and Venezuela’s
Andreina Pinto slipped off their participation.
The German was now going to compete with Poliana Okimoto, Eva Risztov, Isabell Donath, Haley Anderson and Nadine Reichert, where Poliana being the silver medallist at Santos was the strongest among her competitors.
Unlike the first race, where she remained noticeably slower than her former finishers, the German gave a tough time to her challengers in Mexico. With her irresistible efforts in the start of the race, she initiated a head-to-head swim with her rivals. Maurer
dictated terms to her competitors in the beginning of the race, where she easily overwhelmed the efforts of Brazilian swimmer, Okimoto and Hungarian athlete, Risztov.
With her impeccable stroke and fortitude, she stayed ahead of her fellow swimmers in the first half but then she choked and at the same time, Okimoto, Risztov and Donath gained a considerable lead over her. The Wiesbaden born Maurer tried her best to recover
the lead but the damage was done and she lost her second race too.
Okimoto sustained her fastest spot and showed her urgency towards the finishing line, clocking an inspiring time of 2 hours, 01 minutes and 58 seconds for gold medal. Her immaculate efforts throughout the 10km race placed her almost two seconds ahead of
her competitor, Risztov, who stepped on the podium for silver medal, by reporting in a time of 2 hours, 02 minutes and 00 seconds.
The third spot of the race was secured by Maurer’s team-mate, Donath, who remained nearly one second behind her former finisher and settled on the podium for bronze medal with an effort of 2 hours, 02 minutes and 01 seconds. Donath was followed by USA’s
Anderson, who was roughly one second slower than her foregoing competitor and passed the finishing line with a fourth fastest time of 2 hours, 02 minutes and 02 seconds.
Meanwhile, the German expert remained only a few microseconds away from Anderson and crossed the finishing end with a timing of 2 hours, 02 minutes and 02 seconds. Reichert finished her race in seventh place by producing an effort of 2 hours, 02 minutes
and 03 seconds.
The session ended after the completion of race in Women’s category, while Maurer seemed little disappointed with her hard luck. She aroused hopes of her fans by expressing that she will try not to repeat the same in her next race, which was organised at
Setubal, in Portugal.
