Angela Stanford clings to lead in second round of Lorena Ochoa Invitational
American Angela Stanford shot a 67 in the second round of Lorena Ochoa Invitational 2012 to cling to her lead that she seized in the first round along with two other contenders by posting
a 66.
Stanford got off to a sizzling start at the four-day LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament on Thursday at Guadalajara Country Club, Mexico, as she restricted most of her rivals
from advancing.
However, the second round saw the American star surge past the players she was sharing the first-round lead with.
American Michelle Wie and Candie Kung of Chinese Taipei were the other two contenders who shot a 66 each in the opening round on Thursday to share the lead with Stanford.
Kung could not maintain her momentum in the second round on Friday as she carded a 71 to tie for the fourth position on the leaderboard. On the other hand, Wie also tainted her scorecard by
shooting a 75, which brought her crashing down to a tie for 12th position along with three other players.
Stanford looked confident on Friday as she kicked off the round with a clear head. She parred the first hole and launched a birdie on the second hole to set the ball rolling.
She then parred the next four holes and fired three consecutive birdies from 7th to 9th.
On the back nine, the LPGA titan kept the momentum going, but wavered on some holes. She carded two birdies and one bogey on the par-4 15th.
Sharing her thoughts at the end of the round on Friday, Stanford said that she is more than happy that she remained in contention in the second round as well.
She said that she is having a great time in Mexico, as she has already won here before.
“I haven’t either so its kind of fun, I think this week is so much fun because it’s so relaxed, and it’s so laid back. Seems like, you know, when things like that happen, it means that the
fans are having fun. So that’s good,” said Stanford who won the 2008 edition of the tournament.
The third round is likely to stage a tougher battle as fan-favourite Inbee Park romped to the second position after registering a 68.
