Angela Stanford finishes outside top 20 at Hoylake
American Angela Stanford registered an overall 298 at the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 to finish tied for the 23rd position along with two other contenders.
Stanford was lucky to have made a quick start at the major championship, played at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, United Kingdom, but her last-round performance got in her way, causing a dent in her hard-earned position.
The American star shot an 80 in the fourth round as she missed several good chances to get back into contention. However, her strokes lacked precision on most of the holes.
With one birdie, five bogeys and two double bogeys, Stanford’s position took a nosedive, letting her nearest rivals edge past her on the leaderboard.
The weather conditions eased on Sunday, giving players much room to atone for the lapses they made in the first three rounds. With winds sweeping across the course at twenty-five miles per hour, the second round proved quite troublesome for players, but the official quickly came up with an adjusted format and declared the scores null and void.
The second round was replayed on Saturday in a relatively better weather conditions.
Stanford also appeared to be fazed by the gusty winds that kept the players in pain throughout the prestigious tournament, but she held her nerve in the first three rounds, capitalising on the vacuum left by rivals’ poor scores.
Sharing her thoughts about the weather on Saturday, the LPGA titan said that winds were calm, which helped her keep the pressure intact on rivals.
“A lot better. It's kind of frustrating now because it's absolutely perfect out here and the wind has died out. But I'm very thankful that I got to play this morning and didn't have to finish my round yesterday. It was a lot different,” Stanford said while speaking to the LPGA Tour at the end of the second round.
“I can't remember ever being at even par after 36 at a British. So I'm very happy with that. Very happy with how I'm hitting the ball and controlling my ball. So I'm happy where I am. I think that the scores are going to be lower this afternoon”.
