Angela Stanford gains 1-round lead at HSBC Women's Champions
Angela Stanford surprised the spectators in the first round of HSBC Women’s Champions on Thursday, after she carded an impressive 6-udner 66 to grab a 2-stroke lead over her nearest rival.
Stanford is playing among some of the big names in golf, as the field set for the tournament also includes the current world number one Yani Tseng.
The American looked calm on the course, as she kicked off the round with a number of birdies. She appeared to be in a comfortable position on the front nine, as she reeled off birdies.
The course of Tanah Merah Country Club saw windy weather whipping through, giving players plenty of chances to make calculated putts.
On the back nine too, the American star held her nerve, as she recorded 2 birdies, further strengthening her position on the leaderboard.
Speaking at the end of the first round, Stanford spoke to the media and expressed her confidence in her game.
She was glad that she got off to an impressive start, which will help her improve her position in the following rounds.
She surprised fans and the spectators on the tricky 10th hole, shooting a birdie-putt. Her score on the back nine was a modest 34.
"Well it was a pretty good start, birdied 10 and hit it pretty close on 11, in the past I think I've struggled with that stretch right there, 10, 11, 12,"  she said.
She stated that there are a number of holes on the course, which she has always found difficult. However, she did not once falter and made superb shots.
“I can honestly tell you that I’ve never topped a shot and made birdie on the same hole. The fact that I hit some pretty solid shots off the back kind of gave me some confidence throughout the round,” she added.
Thai star Yani Tseng could not impress her fans in the first round, as she carded a 1-under 71. Speaking of her round, Tseng said that she was confident because there will be plenty of chances in the next 3 rounds.
“I was a couple of shots better than last week’s first round,” the 23-year-old said. “I do feel pretty confident”.
