Angela Stanford grabs victory at HSBC Women's Champions
American Angela Stanford stunned spectators in the 4th round of the HSBC Women’s Champions, as she outplayed her rivals in the 3rd playoff hole to win the tournament.
Stanford was pretty comfortable with what she did on Sunday. The victory at Tanah Merah Country Club was her 5th on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour.
The American star kicked off her last day in an impressive style, as she made calculated putts on most of the holes. She carded an overall 71 for the day, piling up enough scores to reach the playoff.
She won the match by parring the final playoff hole. Stanford had to face some resistance from her nearest rivals, Na Yeon Choi and Jenny Shin.
Jenny Shin had picked up pace in the start of the 2nd round, as she managed to share the lead with Stanford.
Happy with her game, Stanford said that she was confident enough to pile up good scores and this is what helped her go in the playoff.
She pocketed a hefty $210,000 thanks to her victory at Singapore. She said that the victory is great and she is missing her home and family.
Stanford said that she wants to get back to her home to surprise her family members.
Shin, who was close to winning the match, played amazingly well. Stanford acknowledged that her nearest rival gave her a tough time but due to a double bogey, she failed.
"I felt for her (Shin) because we've all been in that position," said Stanford. "I didn't think I'd be there at the end. I was all over the map today".
Angela displayed stunning performance right from the start of the tournament. She managed to gain a considerable lead in the first round, strengthening her position on the leaderboard.
Although the field of HSBC Women’s Champions featured some of the big names in women’s golf, Stanford out-manoeuvred all the players with ease.
The current world number one, Yani Tseng, who was expected to shine at Tanah Merah, finished 5th. Tseng played well in the last round, carding a 69.
Speaking to the media after the match, Tseng said that she did not think she would finish 5th despite scoring well in the rounds.
"I'm kind of upset. I feel disappointed because I didn't win this tournament. I was very close this year. I played great front nine, but hopefully next year I won't be disappointed," Tseng said.
