Angela Stanford slips to 18th in world rankings
The 2012 Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia ended in dramatic fashion with South Korean Inbee Park claiming victory, but the event proved to be a real downer for American Angela Stanford who has now slipped two spots in the world rankings.
Before the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 that saw Stanford display a woeful performance, the American star was standing at the 16th position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, but a two-spot dip appears to have dented her hard-earned position.
With the LPGA Hana Bank Championship 2012 set to kick off from October 19 at Incheon, South Korea, Stanford has a good chance to regain her momentum, but performing well in South Korea will be even tougher than it was at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia.
Registering an overall 296 was a heart-breaking finish as Stanford could not make a decent start. She opened her first round with a 73 that let her rivals edge past her early in the morning.
Taking another toll on her position on the leaderboard, the American star posted a 79 in the second round. She tied for the 61st position at the end of the match.
Observers said that Stanford has proved in the past that she is capable of bouncing back after a lacklustre form and this time she should take her game more seriously.
Observers also pointed out that the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) titan kicked off the 2012 season in impressive style as she racked up a title early in the year.
Stanford won the HSBC Women’s Champions in February 2012 as she beat South Korean Na Yeon Choi, Shanshan Feng and Jenny Shin in playoff.
During one of her recent interviews, Stanford said that grabbing five LPGA titles so far in her professional career has been a good experience, but she is still as eager to win as she was at the time of her first victory at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in June 2003.
“I've only done it one time in my career where I've won twice in the same year, so that would be pretty cool for me to do that again. And to win early in the year and late in the year would be pretty big, too, because I think it's such a long year that there's so many ups and downs, it would be nice to have another up,” she said.
