Angela Stanford takes share of third position at Prattville
American Angela Stanford carded an overall 273 at the Navistar LPGA Classic 2012 to tie for the third position along with South Korean M.J. Hur and Haeji Kang.
Stanford made a solid start at the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) event at Prattville, Alabama, United States, as her performance was nearly flawless in the first three rounds.
Having posted a 67 on Thursday, Stanford put her rivals in pressure from the outset, which helped her maintain the momentum in the next two rounds.
The American star was more than happy after she posted a 68 in the second round. However, the last round proved a bit tougher for her as she scored a 70 on the leaderboard.
Stanford was determined not to surrender to her nerves despite a strong roster that featured big names like the defending champion Lexi Thompson of the United States and the current world number one Yani Tseng.
Other key contenders in the field included Stacy Lewis of the United States, Jennifer Johnson, M.J. Hur, Beatriz Recari, Meena Lee, Sandra Gal, Nicole Castrale, Dori Carter, Azahara Munoz, Pernilla Lindberg, Sydnee Michaels, Brittany Lincicome, Suzann Pettersen, Amy Yang, Gerina Piller and Natalie Gulbis.
Sanford started her fourth round in impressive style as she made calculated stokes on the greens. She parred the first three holes and drained a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole. The LPGA titan then made another birdie on the par-5 8th hole.
On the back nine, the American golfer could not make any birdie, but best of all, she avoided carding any bogey.
Stanford said while speaking to the media during the tournament that she could have done well in the third round as she missed plenty of good chances to make an even better score.
"Well, I think scrappy is probably a good word for today.  I got a little loose there like probably 7 through 13, I didn't really know which way the ball was going to go, so made an unbelievable par on 12", she said.
“You know, if things work out tomorrow, I'll look back at that par putt on 12 and that kind of kept me where I needed to be to give me a chance to make some birdies coming down the stretch.  But I was actually probably staring at double bogey, so that par was huge”.
