Question:

Angelfish and other fish in tank?

I have a 125L tank, it's quite large. It's about 7 weeks old. These are my current inhabitants:

1 Altum Angelfish (Very young)

2 Honey Gouramis

1 Three-spot Gourami

1 Small loach

3 Platies

3 Zebra Danios

5 Neon Tetras ( I was told that if I add a baby angelfish with these neon tetras at the same time they will be okay)

I was just wondering, do you think this is abit overcrowded? And also, do you think my angelfish will be okay in this tank? Is it possible to add more fish to the tank. Also, what problems do you think may arrise with my tank.

Thankyou for your time, and consideration.

Regards

  1. Agree with the statement, the Angel will eventually eat the Neon's. Good chance it will have a go at the Danio as well.

Honey Gourami grow to 6cm, 3 spot grow to 6". If the 3 spot is a male it will kill the Honey by either trying to mate with it or in a territory dispute.

When you say small loach, does that mean it will stay small?

At the minute you have room, but adding more fish isn't really an option taking into account the Angel will grow. If you want more fish you need to think about getting rid of the 3 spot and Angel or buying a bigger tank for them and more compatible fish.

  2. In the wild, neon tetras are the natural diet of angelfish.  You may get away with keeping baby angelfish with neon tetras for a very short while, but as soon as the angelfish grow big enough, your neon tetras are going to be lunch.  You can no more keep angelfish with neon tetras for the long term than you could teach a lion to eat salad.

  3. When I had my 125L I had 3 gourami and a pleco, two baby bala sharks and  6 tetra. Then I got frustrated and got a 250L had that a month and got a 480L Now I am about as happy as I can be with a tank.

My angle has never killed anything.

I think you know as well as I do you will not stop at a 125. ;)

Tetra are the fast food of the fish world point.

The rule tends to be don't keep fish together if they can fit in another fishes mouth.

  4. Firstly, I would say that the number of fish you have added is fine and if you add any more it may become overcrowded, so stick with the number of fish you have. Secondly, and very importantly,   your Angelfish will NOT be okay with any small fish, such as tetras. Angelfish are very nice creatures when young, but MOST angelfish become violent as they age, even if they have lived with the tetras from young. Your angelfish will get rather big so it will most likely attack any smaller fish which is why I would only recommend you keep it with fish of its own size. Also, your three spot gourami will most likely 'nip' your tetras (I had one and it tried eating my Guppies, luckily i was there to save it) If it was the shop keeper who told you that the angelfish will be okay with the tetras, he probably said that because he wanted to make a sale and because the problem wouldn't arise immidiately.

    Hope this helps
